Codi “My name is Codi and I am beyond blessed to have found Final Salute INC. I am a single mother of two very young children. I have been in the Army National Guard since 2007. Recently I got laid off permanently from my civilian job. Because of this, I quickly fell behind on all of my bills. My once a month drill check was barely enough to even cover one of my bills. My rent, water, and electric went beyond due dates and I received disconnect notices in the mail. I was also given a date to have my rent paid or be considered for eviction. I called several churches and community programs in the area. The funds for these charities are not always guaranteed and when they do have them they are first come first serve so they run out quickly. Unfortunately, I didn't make it in time to any of the ones that I knew of. I live near a large military base and decided to see if they offered any help. I even reached out to the local veterans posts for advice or help. Because I am National Guard and not active duty, I was informed by all of these places that I am not eligible for any type of aid or their services. All of the military loans and financial assistance are only available to active duty military and reserves and guard that are on title 10 orders. I have also never been deployed in my 10 years so alot of other aids are not available to me because of that. Just when I was ready to give up all hope, a friend told me of a place that they had heard of from someone else and that I should research it. So I did and here I am with Final Salute INC.

I filled out an application online and within 2 days, I received a phone call from Mary Curry. She told me that they would like to help me and asked me to send in my late notices. After being turned down by so many different companies I didn't even expect a response from my application. I was so surprised that someone was willing to help me. I think that a lot of people don't really recognize the fact that the Reserves and the National guard are soldiers too. We sacrifice and work to help the community just like active duty does. I haven't been deployed overseas yet but I have been deployed throughout the United States to help with disasters. I recently returned from South Florida where my unit helped so many people that were devastated from the hurricane. I think that Final Salute INC is a very rare form of help. They are truly a blessing to my family and I could never thank them enough to responding to me after things started spiraling downhill. This company is amazing and I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH! Because of their helping hand, my family will still have a roof over our heads with heat and running water for the upcoming holidays. Final Salute INC is truly a blessing!”

Tera“My name is Tera and I am a disabled Navy vet. While in the service I nearly lost my left leg, thankfully they saved it. I am a single mom of four children. My children's father passed away a year ago. We also went through Hurricane Irma and our county was declared a natural disaster area. We have been through a lot this last year. I was struggling before the hurricane and then had to use bill money to pay for the hurricane related expenses. I do not qualify for food assistance so I am backed against the wall at this point. Not too mention, trying to provide Christmas presents for my four children.

I am truly sorry to need to ask for financial help. I am normally very good at budgeting to make ends meet. This year we just had too many hardships. Being on a fixed income, once I got behind I wasn't able to make ends meet. Any help I may receive I will be so grateful for. I have gathered together the notices of past due payments for my rent, electric, and internet as requested of me. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration of my circumstances.”.

“My name is Lisa. I am a Navy veteran and a single mother of 2 girls ages 11 and 1, Misa and Emma. They are the loves of my life. I recently separated from my youngest daughter’s father due to physical and mental abuse. I have been taking care of myself and my girls without financial support from either of my girl’s dads. I had issues with my vehicle which has caused me to fall behind on my rent. I reached out to Final Salute and they have helped me and my girls to keep our home. Providing a safe and secure home for me and the girls is my number one priority and Final Salute has helped me to do it. Thank you.”

Carmen“I was contacted by Eric Ryan regarding the workshop (SAFE workshop) initially. He explained that if I attended I would receive $500 just for attending. So I submitted my DD 214 online and signed up for it right away. I was told to bring any bills I was behind or going to be behind in. So on the day of the seminar I submitted my lease agreement for my apartment. When I showed up I felt so welcomed.  I was able to network with 3 fellow female veterans, so that was great!  The workshop offered budgeting best practices that I need so badly.  I was able to apply the principles to real life by setting realistic financial goals such as buying a house or saving up for emergency funds.  After the training was completed, we were sent into groups of 10 to the conference room.  We were told that it was there we would receive a check for $500.  I was about to open my envelope when I was instructed not to, until we all had our own  envelopes.  When Jas gave the all clear to go ahead and open my envelope I did.  My jaw dropped, as I found myself looking at a check, not for $500, but for $1392, the exact amount of my rent!  I was immediately shocked and elated and would have kept crying tears of joy if we had not had to take a picture.  Words cannot express the gratitude that overflowed in my heart when I saw that Final Salute along with Mission United had taken care of the full amount of my rent bill for the month of January.  Wow! What Christmas gift it was indeed! Because of that godsend I was able to pay my rent on time, in full!  I was also able to buy the Christmas gifts I wanted to purchase for my family with the surplus in my finances that it had created.

I want to thank Final Salute and Mission United for being such a blessing and a Godsend to me.  You have definitely put me on the right path to success as a Woman Veteran and have made my whole year! I look forward to attending more workshops such as these in order to learn more about how important it is to manage a budget wisely and to set personal goals.  Thank you Jas Boothe, Brian Lynch, and Eric Ryan for being such a blessing in this woman veteran's life.  You have given me hope for the future.”

"In Nov. 2017, I found myself running for my life with my two children. I had suffered long enough at the hands of my abusive spouse of 18 years. When we left, we left with nothing. I had to abandon our home of 7 years and try to figure out a way to start over with nothing. Final Salute stepped in and helped me to do just that by providing the financial assistance needed to pay the first month's rent on our new home. I cannot express the profound gratitude for their help. I served six years in the Air Force and I thought I was strong enough to do everything on my own. Wrong! What Final Salute showed me through their generosity and support is that my fellow sister vets have my back, and I will always have theirs as well. Thank you so much."

I would like to thank Final Salute Inc. for saving me and my son. After losing my job while fighting cancer and heart failure from the chemo drugs, I could no longer afford to pay my electric bill.

Because I have to plug into the wall outlet at night to keep my heart pump going, it was causing me great stress knowing that I was in danger of getting my electricity cut. Final Salute Inc. came in and paid the entire bill ensuring me that I would be able to stay in my apartment.

I have been to many agencies asking for help and was turned away for them all, but Final Salute came through for me and didn't make me fill worthless. Unable to serve with my Air Force Reserve unit at this time, Final Salute reminded me why I have served with honor for 15 years.

I have gained a new feeling of hope and will be forever grateful to Final Salute Inc. for all their help.

"My name is Natasha. I am blessed to have the amazing people of Final Salute Inc. to help my family and I. I am a single mother of 3 beautiful children. I have served 3 tours to Iraq, received numerous awards, and was medically retired.

I was recently evicted by the VA with no moving assistance after they owed me back money. I was not able to get a job after being honorably discharged from the military because of my disability and rejection letters stating I am over qualified. I had no where to go with my children.

I can say now my children and I are able to move into a 4 bedroom place with the help of Final Salute Inc. I am forever grateful for them and glad they stepped in to assist me as a mother and Veteran. Stay blessed!"

"Dear Final Salute,
I can not tell you what a relief I feel having received an email back to my response so quickly. As a Marine, Veteran, I cannot express the amount of appreciation I have for you right now. It took a lot for me to ask for help. I am usually the one helping others and my pride runs very deep, but Parenting solo with 5 children I have learned recently that I have to put my own pride aside for the sake of my kids.

I served in the Marine Corps on active duty from 1992-1996 and then did 2 years in the reserves, I miss it every day. Since then I have gotten an Associates Degree and worked for an amazing company, but in the past year since the War is coming to a close the Govt Contractor I worked for, whom's business almost all depended on our military being deployed, had to down size considerably so I have been on unemployment since. I managed to cut our budget down to survival mode, but since the recent abrupt cancellation to the long term Unemployment benefits December 29th my life , my house, & my kids have been thrown into a downward spiral financially. My kids pitch in with their small part time jobs and it kills me when they hand me money, its not supposed to be this way. I have worked every day of my life since I was 14 and not working now, with sending 50-100 resumes out each week with little or no response is devastating.

Thank you so much for the assistance. When I am back on my feet I promise to return the favor!"

"As an Air Force veteran and single parent, I was prepared for life after the military, so I thought. I did everything by the book, but what I wasn’t prepared for was the government shutdown. Before retirement my plan was in place to start a civilian position with the Veterans Affairs office here in Virginia, but the government shutdown derailed that plan and threw my family into a tailspin.

The position I secured before retirement was cancelled and I no longer had a source of income to support my family. I was forced to make some tough decisions to keep us going. We relocated to small apartment, cut back on any extra spending (entertainment, eating out, etc), but it still wasn’t enough. My retirement pay was simply not enough to sustain the family. During my search for a new job (still searching), my savings was depleted and I saw no way to even keep up with the bare minimum, let alone food, gas, rent and car payment.

I began a search online and at the VA, were I am currently receiving treatment, and found your information. I was reluctant at first, because I was having issues with asking for help, because I always felt like, there was someone else who needed it more than me or that I could handle this on my own. I searched for alternatives, but still came back and received an email that you would be able to help. As I was reading information and testimonials, I realized that this is why organizations like Final Salute, Inc exist, to HELP veterans like me. A sense of relief and hope is what you have given me and my family and we are so grateful."

"I learned of Final Salute Inc. through my Unit at Ft. Belvoir, VA. While deployed to support Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom in 2002-2003, my Aunt suffered and survived multiple aneurysms.  As a result, she remains in a state of dementia and severe memory loss. My mother, now 80, is her sole caretaker, and recently has had her share of health issues and is no longer working. I am now taking care of both my mother and my aunt which has been financially challenging. I fell behind on financial obligations to my creditors, one being with my utility company.

We are now approaching the winter months, and heat and gas are vitally important especially with two senior citizens. I reached out to Final Salute Inc. for help and without hesitation they stepped in and paid my utility bill. While I foresee the next few months being challenging, it is good to know that there are organizations like Final Salute Inc.

I really appreciate you for your willingness to step in and help support those who have served and sacrificed their lives on enemy territory. God bless your organization and this great Country."

Sincerely,

"I am a woman Veteran.  I was very proud to serve my country and even after I was released from active duty, I still served the active duty Soldiers every day as a civilian.  There is no feeling greater than to serve alongside your comrades, but to still be able to service them as a civilian is an amazing feeling.

I am also a single mother of three and I also have legal custody of my nephew. I don’t receive any assistance or child support to help me so after the government Furlough this summer, it seemed like I could never catch up.  I tried to get help from dozens of places, but no one wanted to help a working mother.

I have always provided for my family, but things have just been rough for me.  I have child with sickle cell and I can barely pay for her specialty visits sometimes.  It has definitely been rough, but I tried really, really hard not to give up.  I refuse to quit because I don’t want my kids to think that was the answer.

I had one day to get my rent caught up before I would lose my home and I was a second away from losing my mind.  On the way to work this morning, I called my aunt and told her I think I am cursed.  I said “Nothing Good Happens for me.”  Of course she reminded me that GOD has my back and I would be okay.

When I received the e-mail that Final Salute was going to assist me, I was in shock!  There are no words to explain the load lifted off my back by Final Salute.  I just Thank GOD that they were there to assist me when I had given up all my hope."

"I want to say THANK YOU so much to you and the S.A.F.E. Program! I'm a single mother of 3. My 16 year-old son Tyler and my 12 year-old daughter Victoria are the only 2 of my children still living at home. I also have a daughter that is 22 and in the Army and currently stationed in Seattle Washington. I'm also a 16 year Army Veteran and spent a year over in Iraq between 2003-2004.

Besides the struggles that I've had with PTSD and working with the VA to get help with that, I recently fell behind on my rent and tried everything I could think of to get caught up. As time went by I just kept falling further and further behind. I was given an eviction notice and only had about 7 days until my court date to come up with the money for my rent before I was evicted when I came across your program on the internet. I applied and sent in my documents and was contacted right away.

Without your quick help I would have been evicted from my apartment and homeless with no place to go for me and my 2 kids. My biggest fear for my kids and I was not only were we going to be homeless but we were going to be evicted right before the holidays as well and just when the weather was getting cold.

Thanks to your program we will have a place to live. I cannot express enough how much I appreciate the help I received from the S.A.F.E program and how quickly you worked to save my home."

"I am a single mom of two gorgeous kids & a proud Marine veteran. My children are now & have always been my main priority. The last 3 years, I have struggled to find a comfortable balance to working, going to school & being the sole provider & caretaker for 2 young kids. Unfortunately, I never found the balance & decided to drop out of school & take a full-time job in Texas, nearly 1400 miles away from all our friends and family. Being in a strange city with no moral support is hard enough to begin with, but living in crummy motels with 2 little ones is scary & stressful on top all that. Final Salute gave my family the help it needed to get in a safe home as we're making a transition into a better life. I was offered a new job and Final Salute was able to pay my deposit and first month's rent; allowing me to put my children in a safe and suitable environment! I truly do not have the words to express my gratitude and appreciation for this wonderful organization & I cannot wait to be able to give back to it so they may help other veterans & mothers who may be in similar situations! Thank you!!!"

“Being a single mother of two small children is hard, especially when you have no help and no job. I was in the Navy for 8 years and when I got out the real world that was awaiting me was no joke. I did well for a while then it all went downhill. I was jobless and my two small children and I no longer had power in the house. We went without power for a whole week before I was referred to Final Salute Inc. I'd never heard of them until I really needed them.

I filled out my application on the website and received a call instantly. I was given instructions on what paperwork was needed and as soon as I submitted that paperwork, I received another call that they had everything and would contact me with a decision. A few hours later I got the call that they had already paid my power bill and I was given my confirmation number to give to the electric company!

My power was restored and shortly after that, I was able to make my children dinner in our home. If it were not for the amazingly dedicated and committed people at Final Salute Inc, my children and I would still be in the dark. Thank you Final Salute Inc, my family and I salute you!”

“My name is Shelby. I served proudly with U.S. Army for 5 years on Active Duty. I spent all five years with the Military Police Corp. and was deployed with the 170th Military Police Company twice to Iraq.  My husband was also with the U.S. Army and an infantry man. Since getting out, finding steady employment has been a struggle. While deployed to Iraq, my husband was severely injured with a gunshot wound to his leg, limiting his job options.  I work as an aid in a High School. With it being the summer months, we had fallen behind on several bills.  I reached out to Final Salute for assistance and they said they could help. With their help I will be able to keep my car for another month and my power won’t get turned off. This will help me catch up until school starts and money starts coming in.  There is obviously a lot more to the story but in short that is it…Final Salute is saving my butt!!! From the bottom of my heart thank you to Final Salute and all of their wonderful donors.  Hopefully I will be able to pay it forward somehow when I catch up.

Thanks again,”

"I would like to thank the wonderful people at Final Salute Inc. for helping me pay my rent and electricity bill, so that my son can stay in an air-conditioned home this summer. Without them, we would have been evicted from our home. The People at Final Salute are very friendly, helpful, and understand that even during rough financial situations, providing food for your kids sometimes has to come before paying the bills. If you're the type that's too scared to ask for help, they are completely safe, understanding and easy to ask for help. They will work with you and do their best to help you out."

I am currently in the Army Reserve. I was struggling after losing full time work due to lack of childcare. Soon the rent and bills started piling up and I was afraid that I was going to be evicted. I made numerous phone calls to different organizations and almost all of them had stopped their rental assistance programs or were unable to help. I then remembered seeing Ms. Boothe on the Katie Show back in May and put in my application. I was contacted the following day. As soon as they received all of my information the payment was immediately made to my landlord. I was amazed at how quick they were with getting back to me. I will be forever thankful to Final Salute for what they have done for me and my family.

"I am a proud female Veteran. I was an E5 in the Army National Guard for eight years. I served in Iraq in 2003 with the 220th QM Team out of Plymouth, MA. While I was overseas I was extremely ill. I went through eight visits to the doctor before ending up in the hospital from serious dehydration and weight loss. After some testing, I find out that I had a stomach disorder called IBS due to the stress of being over there. On top of that, I learned while I was away that the company I had been working for when I left was being sold. Needless to say, when I came home, I had the fact that I was losing my job to deal with on top of dealing with PTSD, nightmares, and the transition of coming home again. I returned to work for two months when I came home, and was then laid off.

After I returned home from Iraq, I had a horrible time dealing with stress in regards to anything and everything. I had to leave two jobs because I couldn’t handle the smallest amount of stress or responsibility. Everything was irritating to me and I had no patience. I felt as if I was losing myself; like I was losing my mind. Because of that, I have lost a lot. I was forced to move out of my apartment due to numerous late rent payments, even though I was paid current. I had to sell my living room furniture, along with some other belongings, just to pay my car payments so I wouldn’t lose my car. I know am blessed to have come home alive, but I have been struggling ever since. I currently go to therapy, and take both anti-anxiety and anti-depression medication.

I have since moved out to my own place again. I have a full time job I have been at for four years now. Although I am happy to be out of my mother’s apartment, I am in serious financial distress with rent and all of my other bills. I had to purchase a new used vehicle because the one I owned had so many problems I couldn’t pay to fix. I currently owe $45,427.90 for my student loan. I have accrued over $13,000 in interest from having to put it in forbearance so many times.

I have sent so many emails and letters in search of assistance. Just as I was ready to give up I received a response from Final Salute Inc. They took the time to hear my story, to talk with me and ask me what I needed. They came through for me when no one else would. A check was sent out for my rent the following day. I can't express in words the gratitude I feel to them. Thank you isn't enough. Someone from the organization said to me, "Your service should be enough. America needs to do better." That statement made my day and made me feel appreciated, for the first time since I came home. More organizations should be this understanding and compassionate. Final Salute Inc came to my rescue, they were my God send."

"I served proudly in the US Army for 6 years. During that time I went to Germany and Fort Hood, Texas before finally settling in Fort Eustis, VA. There I met the man of my dreams (or so I thought). I was swept off my feet in a world wind romance that eventually led to marriage and three beautiful children. However things quickly went from dream to nightmare. The man that I thought was perfect turned out to be abusive and mean. I endured 10 years of physical and emotional abuse before I finally found the courage to leave.

Things have been hard these last few years. I have went from place to place because I could not afford to take care of myself and my five children. After using my GI Bill to go to nursing school and I was able to obtain a full time and part time job as a nurse. I finally was able to afford suitable housing for me and my children. However due to the recent economic climate I lost my full time position and with that my full time salary. I have used all my savings to stay afloat these last several months. Finally it became so overwhelming that I got behind in my rent for two months. On the verge of an emotional breakdown, I called the local social services office when I was served with an eviction notice. They were very kind and gave me the numbers to several local agencies. None of which were able to help me.

One day while online I ran across the website for Final Salute my first thought was that they probably only help veterans with disabilities and such. But to my pleasant and grateful surprise they stated they help all women Veterans. So I filled out the online form and within an hour someone email me back with the questions "How much do you need and where do we send it?" In one day I went from possible eviction to being able to make it another day. I am so thankful to Final Salute for all that they have done for me and my children. I was able to move to a full time position at work and now I am able to care for my children. If it weren’t for Final Salute this story would not have such a happy ending. Thank You to all that make Final Salute the organization that it is."

"I served in the Army for 8 years. I am a veteran. I had been laid off from my job after being there for almost 7 years. I lost everything, credit, friends, and my way of life as well as my happiness. I was struggling to make ends meet with unemployment that did not cover all my expenses, electric, rent, car payment, loan payments, and credit card payments. Needless to say, the rent was really what I was concerned about. I had fallen behind in my rental payments. I had contacted other agencies here in the area but no one had resources available to assist because there is a great need.

I contacted 211 and they asked me if I was a veteran and proudly I said yes. To make a long story short, the representative name was Debbie. She kindly gave me 3 numbers and names of possible organizations that would possibly assist me.

One of the names of the organizations was Final Salute!!!!!! OMG, I contacted them this morning around 9:00 and by 1:30 they had paid my rent for me to avoid court and possible eviction. When I say this organization was like "Johnny on the Spot" They were eagerly awaiting my documentation to verify and assist me. I am in AWE still because I never would have thought that this would have happened so quickly like it did. Final Salute is a blessing!!!!!

They are sincerely helping women who are veterans sustain housing, avoid homelessness and bring peace of mind. I am still crying. I feel like a burden of worry has been lifted from my shoulders. I had been stressed for the past few weeks because I just started a new job and I am so happy because I have a job and now I can start a recovery to restoration of my livelihood. My daughter will be attending college in the fall. Thank GOD for FINAL SALUTE!!!!"

"I am a proud Veteran of the US Army; I'm also the single Mother of 4. I never thought myself and my children would be in a position of utter despair. In 2011 I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety, I lost my job and then my home; nothing seemed to matter anymore. Slowly but surely I started to get back on my feet, but employment is hard to find and continues to be a challenge as my credit has suffered. Through an angel here, on earth I was put in contact with Final Salute!! Within minutes, minutes of hitting the submit button someone was calling me ready and willing to offer assistance.

My rent was not paid for the month, late fees were piling up and how convenient an audit was done and a pet deposit was added as well. I had no idea how I was going to pay! Final Salute stayed in constant contact with me until my issue was resolved! I cannot express my gratitude enough that there are people out there willing to jump in and literally save me from what would have been sure to become another depressive time in my life! I'm inspired to get up, get out and do something to touch someone else life the way Final Salute has touched mine!"

Thank You So Much

"I served in the US Navy for 8yrs. My husband and I were dual-military and after he got out in 2006, I became head of household and the main source of income in our family even AFTER I got out in 2008. After leaving active duty, we moved back home to Hawaii and was blessed to be able to get hired on as a Navy contractor. As blessed as I was feeling, I feel as though my life became a series of unfortunate events thereafter. I lost my father 6months later and a few other close family members. It then came down to helping pay funeral costs or paying my own bills? One thing led to another, my bills fell behind, cost of living was ridiculous and we decided to leave Hawaii and head out to Washington. Though things were cheaper, I was still the sole source of income and adjusting was hard. I felt as though we were never able to catch up on anything, most of our bills went to collection and our credit suffered because of it. On top of that, the one vehicle we had seems to constantly require some sort of MAJOR REPAIR, thus forcing us to choose which bills to pay and which ones we "think" we could push a little further. To add insult to injury, the contractor I had been working for for 5yrs lost their contract with the Navy 2months ago, therefore causing me to lose my job and the MAJORITY of our income. Life was hard enough trying to figure out how to pay our bills and how to manage paying back our debt with both our incomes, now we had to figure out how to do so with only 40% of it. Needless to say, it seems like everything bad that could happen, has happened. My car is again in need of repairs and my rent was late and we were put on notice for eviction. Most days it’s "Should we pay this bill or should we buy groceries?"

I knew of Final Salute Inc because I myself work for an organization here that reaches out to help women veterans find the resources they need to get help. Can you believe how hurt my pride was when it was ME who now needed help? I was afraid and ashamed to say the least; but I've learned that sometimes, even those that GIVE HELP, NEED HELP and am so GRATEFUL that Final Salute Inc exists! I reached out to numerous organizations here in the area and got just their voicemail or "They're only here on so and so day so you need to call back later." Let me tell you hearing that HURT. I do not even live in the same state as Final Salute and yet from the opposite end of the country, my fellow sisters in arms were able to reach out within 4hrs and help me stay in my home!!!! I cannot even begin to tell you how grateful I am for Jaspen Boothe and her organization!! Because of them, I am able to live another day in my home and am able to continue reaching out to my fellow sister veterans and sharing with them the resources they need to help get them back on their feet; the most important resource being FINAL SALUTE INC."

"My name is Lucy; I am a Veteran of the United States Army and currently an Air Force Reservist. I joined the Army in 2001. I deployed to Iraq twice, once as a soldier and again as a civilian contractor. I am a single-mother with 3 children ages 18, 13 and 8. From November 2009 until December 2012 I was an active Reservist on orders. Due to Defense budget cuts, I was no longer put on orders and could not find full-time employment.

The past 5 months have been extremely difficult to say the least. My power, water and phone have all been turned off at least once. My rent has not been on time and this month I simply couldn’t pay at all as my savings is depleted.  All of my bills are behind, to include my car note. Most of the bills that I couldn’t pay have gone to a collection agency and it’s affecting my credit. I requested assistance from the local community agencies as well as other local veteran agencies. There was some assistance given with the utilities, but the rent and more affordable housing has been the real problem, in addition to not finding permanent full-time employment. My anxiety/panic disorder has been worse than ever and all the VA doctor recommends is to put me on another pill. I’ve been struggling! Out of necessity, I have completely changed mine and my children’s eating and buying habits.

We only eat organic, grass-fed or real foods that I get from the farmer’s markets or Whole Foods.  It’s not nearly as expensive as I thought.  I’m actually saving money because real foods are more filling than processed foods so we eat less and are more satisfied.  I am learning to make bread and can my own foods.  I also want to learn to make cheese, kombucha, kefir, and well, anything that I can make myself I’m going to give it a try.  We go meatless at least once a week and eat leftovers.  I refuse to throw food away.  I make my own deodorant, laundry detergent, toothpaste, cleaning products, etc.  In any way that I can be frugal or sustainable I have been doing it or researching it.  When I do buy clothes, I go to the thrift shop and scrounge to get whatever we need.  I don’t have cable tv.  I have a leaf antenna for local stations and Netflix. I have a magicJack for my house phone.  My cell phone is prepaid.  I rent books and movies for free at the library.  My children and I walk our dogs or go to the beach for recreation.

I have applied to numerous jobs over the past few months.  Lo and behold, finally, through Personnel Force Innovation, I am being put on active duty orders starting 17 June!  The job is in Alexandria, VA.  I believe I will have 5 travel days, so we will be moving around 12 June.  I can’t express enough what a relief this is for me!  I wasn’t working because I didn’t feel like it or was being lazy; I wasn’t working because I couldn’t find a job.  But, the job hasn’t started yet and there is still the matter of this month’s rent.  The landlord has agreed to let me out of the lease at the end of this month.  I started looking around for programs and assistance with some type of transitional or temporary housing.  I found the Yellow Ribbon Registry Network online and eventually went to the Final Salute website.

I cannot believe how fast they helped me pay the rent for this month!  I gave the property manager their direct information so he could give them the 3-Day Notice and just like that they said a check would be sent for the rent.  I was in the library when I got the e-mail saying I would get help, I started crying.  It’s been so hard!  It’s been so difficult!  It’s been such a challenge!  And, I am still in shock by how quick they were able to help me.  It was only a matter of hours after filling out the online application.  There are many obstacles to overcome such as temporary housing next month, getting my bills caught up (especially my car so it doesn’t get repossessed), moving, finding housing in VA, fixing my credit, etc…  This was one big, huge hurdle and being helped like this has given me the boost I needed to deal with these other issues.

When I wear my uniform and a child looks at me, I feel proud because I know that they see me and they believe that I will keep them safe.  It makes me feel good inside because I am going to keep them safe!  This is the feeling I got from Final Salute, only I was the child.  I can’t thank them enough for giving me this newfound hope and recharging my faith in humanity.  Yesterday was also my youngest son’s birthday and I was able to make him the meal that he wanted with joy instead of with worry.  Thank you is not enough, but from the bottom of my heart, I thank you!  What you’re doing for people like me is amazing work.  I will give back in any way I can to keep the cycle of hope in perpetual motion."

" I am an Air Force Veteran, who had done well in the years following my Honorable Discharge. I have been extremely blessed when searching for work, due to my time served; employers often hired me because of my Military background. The time that I served has been an experience that has stayed with me.

My home was always in NJ. In January of 2011, my children’s father made a decision to abandon us, leaving me no choice but to re-locate in March to NC to stay with a cousin "until I get back on my feet". After 22 days of living with her, she forced us to go to a homeless Shelter in High Point, NC; my oldest son was having a very hard time adjusting to living in a shelter. After 4 weeks we re-located to a Homeless shelter in Winston-Salem; during this time a representative from the VA made arrangements for my children and I to obtain a Section-8 voucher, granted through the VASH program.

Before I could even use the voucher, I was hired on a temp basis for a great company in Greensboro.  Well my income from the job was over the income limit for the voucher, and I had to relinquish it, which I was happy to, because I felt like if I couldn't use it, then I knew that it would be going to some other family who needed it. After living in the shelter for 6 months we finally moved to Greensboro in October of 2011, where we are presently.

On July 23, 2012, I became a permanent employee with the company. I have been able to get myself, and my children back on the right path. I was so proud of maintaining my household bills by myself; my children are real troopers, they hung in there and they are currently ages 15, 14, 12. They have been my rock, my inspiration, everything I do, I do with them in mind. I have yet to obtain financial support from their father (but I'm working on it!).

As happens in life, I soon found myself struggling to make ends meet. Some monthly bills started to come in way higher than I expected. After making countless payment arrangements seemingly every month, I knew that I needed to reach out for help, to get a grip, and get things back under control being that I have no relatives in this area. I did contact the VA, and was not able to qualify for any assistance; low and behold while searching the internet I came across the website for Final Salute.

I applied for assistance, and was contacted immediately. I was both shocked and surprised at the prompt reply; words cannot express my feelings of gratitude. I feel so proud to be a Veteran, and hold in high regards all Veterans. I will now do my part in supporting in any way I can, the mission of Final Salute. So many of our homeless are women veterans and they need to know about resources available to them. Again I am truly grateful, and blessed.

God Bless Final Salute, and God Bless America!"

"OMG! I don't know where to begin! I'm an Air Force veteran, who had a series of unfortunate events happen to me. After being laid off, I lost my house (rental) & didn't have anywhere to go. So, for about 2 years, I was homeless. I was able to get employment through a temporary agency. After talking with other homeless veterans, I was able to get an apartment. That was a joyous feeling; to have the keys to a place that I could call home. Working through a temp agency has it's good and bad perks. The good being you receive weekly pay. The bad being whenever the company you're working for closes for holidays or inclimate weather, the temporary employees do not get paid. With so much going on in December and January, I fell behind on my bills.

I called the VA Hospital for assistance and was given some numbers to call. I had no ideal there are so many organizations available for veterans! I called and checked websites to several establishments. Finally, I came across FINAL SALUTE. I read the information about the organization and was simply overwhelmed with joy and pride. I decided to apply and what a miracle that has turned out to be! FINAL SALUTE did something that a number of agencies didn't do; THEY MAINTAINED SOME TYPE OF COMMUNICATION/FEEDBACK! I also have to applaud the honesty shown to me. After a few days, FINAL SALUTE was able to assist me & saved me from being homeless again! I don't have a computer at home, so I rely on the systems at public libraries. Once I read the email stating what had been done, I just sat there and cried! I cried tears of joy! I didn't care who saw me! I was just so thankful and grateful for the blessing that FINAL SALUTE sent my way! I walked out of the library with my head up high; extremely proud to be a female veteran and ready to share the joy with others that may be going through a similar situation.

As a matter of fact, that's exactly what I did today! A gentlemen called & said that he was facing eviction soon. Of course, I couldn't give him the number to FINAL SALUTE but I gave him the contact numbers to ALL the other organizations! I couldn't just sit there and wish him well. I had to do something! Maybe some of the other agencies couldn't/wouldn't help me, but they may be able to help someone else! I also wanted to share that I've volunteered several times with the Point-In-Time Homeless count in the area. What an experience! The wooded areas that we take for granted is home for someone who needs a helping hand."

GOD BLESS YOU FINAL SALUTE!! PLEASE CONTINUE YOUR JOURNEY OF SAVING LIVES & UPLIFTING BROKEN SPIRITS!

"Life is full of unexpected and unpredictable moments. I am at a time in my life where I have come to one of the many unexpected moments. This time brought on a series of hardships where it seemed like a snowball effect.

A few things happened within the past year in which I had not planned. One of which was my employer terminating my health insurance, as this was an administrative oversight. I am chronically ill and had been going through a series of tests with my doctors to figure out what was going on with me and all of a sudden someone did not process my health benefits. for the past 3 months I had no insurance and neither did my 4-year old son. This led to being sick and my employer not paying me for the days I couldn't come in, which led to being behind on childcare tuition, which led to taking off from work to watch my son.....which was leading to a possible termination from my agency, which was leading to us being homeless. I had been living with family for the past year, month-to-month due to another unforeseen event.

I am a single mother and do not make much money, but don't fall into society's bracket for assistance. I thought I had nowhere to go, but knew I needed medical attention. So I went to the VA hospital and it was there that I first heard about Final Salute. At first when the Social Services worker at the VA provided this information to me, she told me about the H.O.M.E. program. However at this time there was a wait list. The main thing is: she provided me with a RESOURCE. A valuable resource for Women Veterans. I hadn't heard of but a few Veterans resources, let alone for women. So I was actually intrigued. The worker also provided me with a few other unknown resources, however Final Salute stuck in my head!

I went home that same day and looked up Final Salute on the internet and was amazed! Although I had never imagined being in the situation that I was in, seeing everything that Final Salute does and offers gave me hope. No need to provide the name of a couple of other services that I had contacted, as they took weeks to respond. I believe it was not even 12 hours after I submitted my application for the S.A.F.E. program when someone contacted me! This person was CONSISTENT! They were right to the point with asking me what exactly I needed and when. I couldn't come up with extra funds when I had been behind on everything else alone.

I would like to thank Final Salute for being there when I needed them. Words cannot express my gratitude. I am completely grateful to God for this non-profit. I prayed for days and this definitely was my answer. Someone finally got "it" right when locating resources for our women veterans. I would recommend this without question. Most of all, I look forward to volunteering with them to help others like me.

I am proud to be a US Military Woman Veteran; experiencing this generosity just makes me want to give back to my fellow Veteran's even more!"

Thank you again!

"Mrs. Boothe,

We tried to coordinate on a motorized wheelchair and car lift for a female Soldier, currently in a Warrior Transition Unit. She has had a difficult time with chronic pain which has affected all aspects of her daily life from dressing and bathing herself, to walking even short distances.  The Service Member's pain is caused by sciatica, bulging/herniated discs in her spine, disc degeneration, overall joint pain due to Fibromyalgia, as well as other issues.  The Service Member has been through various forms of treatment and pain management with minimal success.  It is difficult for her to find a comfortable position in which to sit, lay, or sleep in.  As a result, the Service Member often does not sleep through the night which directly corresponds with how she feels physically and emotionally each day.   Mrs. Boothe, would this be an item that your organization could provide assistance with?"

"My family and I greatly appreciate the support, kindness and generosity of Finale Salute Inc., in helping me acquire a mobile wheelchair and car lift in less than a week.  It takes people like yourself, your organization and volunteers from Hometown Heroes, very responsive and caring for veterans like myself to make things happen!  Through your assistance, I see that people can see past the chair and see the person with a need and purpose for life, for that I am grateful.  The mobile wheelchair has already enhanced my life tremendously, allowing me a since of independence from battling neck/ back injuries for last three years.  My family has been moved by your organizations thoughtfulness and eagerness to respond to a veterans need.  We are honored to be associated with your organization and great volunteers!

Again, thank you for all that you have done, are doing and will continue to do for veterans and their families. I sincerely applaud you!”

"My name is Cathy; I am Veteran of the United States Army in which I was enlisted for 23 years.  Three years ago my husband and I separated, he became addicted to drugs and I had to take on the responsibility of being a single parent to two teenage boys. I am now the soul provider of my children, I had to make some tough decisions in the last year, one was to not extend my active reserve orders anymore and return to Texas in September 2012, so that my children could be near the friends and some family that they had grown up with and felt comfortable around.  I felt doing this would give them a more stable environment, but it was a hard decision to take such a huge pay cut, though I felt I must so my children could continue to be in the community they loved.  I have had a difficulty trying to pay some bills and have really no one to ask for help.

I'm the only source of income in the household, and trying to take care of my children and working two jobs has proved to be very difficult. I have really no close family or friends to help me and those that are close are having the same issues and I couldn’t burden them with my financial issues. I googled “help with rent for women Veterans” and came upon this Organization called Final Salute, I was amazed how quickly they helped me as I was about to be evicted. They helped me so much, not only helping me keep my home, but in doing this it also gave me back my faith  in others, the belief that there is still good people out there."

“My name is Melissa,

I am a Navy Veteran, and I served for seven years when I got out in 2011.  I am a single parent with little to no support. I got out of the military to be there for my daughter, and just felt like there were no other options for me to be in her life. I knew that it wouldn't be easy, but never did I think that I would be taking care of my daughter without any support from her father. I lost two important people in my life in 2006 while I was in the military, my mother and father. Life hasn't been easy; most of my family is in Texas. I’m not sure about going back there since I haven't had any support since day one. I am working as hard as I can. I had a PRN job for over a year and have went on countless interviews. I never give up on providing the best for my daughter; I am now in school and on the 1st started a new job that will last till mid-May. I am praying for a  long-term job so that me and my daughter can have a better life and move into a bigger apartment where she can have her own room . I am so thankful for this service because it just showed 100% love and care and I have never been in the situation that I was currently in. I came close to being homeless. I would say that this service is really quick, I mean it was Monday night when I applied and now it's Tuesday! I was so shocked and thanking God cause words can't describe how I feel that this weight is lifted off of my shoulders! There is so much more to my story and I will say that this service deserves all the support and donations because it does so much more from others like me! Thank you Final Salute, you have my support because you supported me and made me feel the care that the organization provides. Thank you!!!”

Respectfully,

"Hello all,

My name is Briana, I am Veteran of the United States Marine corps in which I was enlisted for four years. While in my last year of enlistment my father left my mother, causing her to have a mental breakdown. She tried to kill herself and in the midst of that, my autistic little sister was trying her best to take care of her. They evaluated her and the determined she had a severe case of bi-polar disorder. So instead of re-enlisting I came home to take care of my mother. She has been in and out of the hospital for several attempts to take her live and one lung cancer scare.

I'm the only source of income in the household, and trying to take care of my mother and hold a job has proved to be very difficult. With my father not helping, my credit shot, and no other family or friends to help me I'm glad that I've stumbled across this program. Final Salute has helped me so much, not only helping me keep my home but also gave me hope that there are good people out there."

"Hello everyone! My name is Barbara. I am a Veteran who served in the U.S Army for eight years until I was medically discharged. Currently, I am under medical care. I seek professional help due to my Depression and PTSD. I deployed to Afghanistan back in 2009. I still keep the memory of our wonderful fallen comrade Soldier who is not here with us today. May SGT Ramirez continue to RIP. It was an honor to have worked with him, till the day before Father's Day we were under four attacks. One out of the four Rocket Mortar Explosions hit right on the roof of the front guard shed where SGT Ramirez was located. The enemy didn't give SGT Ramirez a chance to fight back, they took him on the first try. Our unit was willing to fight back and we worked so hard to make sure we made it back home safe.

Since I've been out of the service, I'm still going through hard times. I've just lost my father six months ago. My father passed away from cancer on the 14 Jun 12 and I buried him on 16 Jun 12 ( Also the day before father's day) about the same time I had to say good-bye to SGT Ramirez the only difference it was three years apart. Financially I was hurting. Reason being, I helped pay for my father's funeral and mentally I had to make a mandatory visit to see my family for the holidays, since this was our first Christmas without him. My family lives fifteen hours away from me. Since I've made the sacrifice, I took the risk of being put out of my home with no electric. I've could of died or gotten sick from not having any heat, nor being able to cook food or stay warm.

My friends and family couldn't help me but Thanks to Final Salute, I am alive today drinking nice warm coffee and waking up to a nice warm place in my home. The organization has really made an impact in my life and I feel truly grateful and blessed on today. Now that I have a financial boost, I am able to start fresh for the new year with a great budget in which can be easily maintained. Thanks again Final Salute!!! I Salute You for the great help that has been provided!!! God Bless :-)

“My name is Sonia and I’m a 9 year veteran of the United States Army. After returning home from Iraq/Kuwait in 2008, I thought “Ok, I’m about to take my civilian career into my own hands and finally do what I’ve been wanting to do; go to school!.” I noticed a few changes in my personality after returning home but I quickly dismissed them because I had work to do. My son Michael was 3 when I left and four when I returned, but I had already spent more than 1/3 of his life away from him. One week after my return, I enrolled into the Art Institute and completed my first semester with 2 A’s and 1 B.

What I didn’t realize what that I left one busy environment (Iraq) and jumped right into another (college and motherhood). Even though I got good grades, I dismissed so many signs of PTSD and depression/anxiety and paranoia. I wasn’t paying bills on time, my son was always late for school, I wasn’t putting gas in the car, I was always looking over my shoulder and worried about my surroundings, I became easily irritated by life, noises and people and started to withdraw myself. Being a parent and especially a single parent requires a lot and after a while I felt incapable of giving to my son because I couldn’t get a grip emotionally. My grades went from A’s to F’s and I was put on academic probation. I had a nervous breakdown.

I felt incapable of taking care of my family and my household. Spiritually, emotionally, physically, financially… I was suffering and didn’t know how to live. I realized that as a soldier (because I will always see myself that way) I was ashamed of who I had become. How could someone who wore the Army uniform feel so inadequate… so weak… and be in such need? But God has an amazing way of giving life back to the lifeless!!! I started seeking help for the different challenges I was facing but was still very behind financially.

When I contacted Final Salute Inc, I KNEW WITHOUT A DOUBT THAT GOD was working in the hearts of the many workers at this organization. They made the process so easy because their biggest concern was taking care of my son and I and helping us through our time of need.

I contacted them about my situation on Aug 6th, 2012 @ 2:24p.m. I received a response from them on Aug 6th, 2012 at 2:34p.m. On Aug 6th 2012 between 3:10-4:00p.m., I had completed my online application; and at 8:42p.m., I received an email telling me that both my electricity bill and rent would be taken care of!!!

If that is not EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE, I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS!!! Asking for help and being vulnerable is never easy… regardless of who you are. Being transparent about where life hurts can be even harder. But THANK YOU FSI FOR MAKING IT SO EASY FOR MICHAEL AND I TO SAY, WE NEED HELP! Thank you even more for giving us the help we needed.”

Love you guys,

"My name is April Schrock and I am an Army Veteran and currently going through a MED Board through the Army Reserves due to a leg injury in Jan 2010 which made me unemployable in my trade. I got sick in Sept 2011 which required hospitalization through the VA, surgery at WRNMMC, and time in a rehab center which spanned 7 months during which time me and my 2 cats (my boys) ended up homeless. I ended up in the shelter system for 6 months after being released from the rehab center which brought challenges unlike any I had experienced in the past. Through the help of The Final Salute paying my first month rent and security deposit, I incurred less debt and stress than expected moving from homelessness to housing. The decrease in stress was GREATLY appreciated as I had re-started my Masters program in I/O Psychology two weeks prior to moving. The only thing that would have made this move happier and easier would be the ability to reunite with my boys (two cats) after now more than a year apart which will occur in time when I am able to put aside enough funds to bring them home once again.

Thank you to the Final Salute for helping me on the beginning steps of getting my life back to normal,"

"I am here today to openly thank you for giving me a second chance to continue my journey with my child.

My name is Palmenia, I am a Navy Veteran and a parent of a teenager son,  recently I became unemployed and while searching for jobs , my only transportation broke down.  Due to the fact I do not have any family and real close friends I found myself stranded with no money to pay for the repairs of my car, a bill that happens to be more than what I owe on it. Well! I try contacting every organization out there to see if they could work with me regarding my transportation, I explained to them my situation and every one said NO we can’t help you and the others did not even bother replying back to my e-mails. By that point I started getting stressed out because after working all my life I felt pressured and feared losing my home.  If I do not have a car, I can’t go out there and apply for jobs, take my son to school, or go back to College etc. I have always depended on me for everything.

During my frustration I was sent to talk to the VA Medical center Social worker, I explained to her my situation, she believed me.  My social worker referred me to FINAL SALUTE.

I came home and on the night of 8/13/2012 I sent an e-mail and by 0800 8/14/2012 FINAL SALUTE was contacting me and immediately the organization started taking action to help me with my problem, when I tell you that FINAL SALUTE made me feel as if my situation was their number one priority, not counting that CURRY’S AUTO SHOP teamed up to give my son and I a better tomorrow.

They evaluated my situation and came up with the best option for me. Today I am back on the road, have 3 job interviews next week, and I have signed up to go back to College and continue this journey.

FINAL SALUTE!  THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME AND FOR GIVING THIS VETERAN AND HER CHILD A SECOND CHANCE WHEN IT SEEMS THAT I WAS ABOUT TO LOOSE IT ALL.

CURRY’S AUTO SHOP THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME FEEL LIKE FAMILY EVERY TIME YOU COMMUNICATED WITH ME OVER THE PHONE AND FOR YOUR HARD WORK GETTING THE CAR READY FOR ME.

Thank you for caring for us.  GOD BLESSES YOU!!

With much respect,"

“Thank you for your PROMPT response to my request for rental deposit.  Part of that went for my service dog being able to live with me, for which I am eternally grateful!”

“Without the help of Final Salute, this Veteran would not have been able to rent her new apartment, and she certainly could not have covered the extra deposit needed for her service dog!  I can’t thank you enough for your generosity and quick response!”

"Last summer (2011) I was unemployed and conducting a job search when I found out that I had to undergo two surgeries. I was unable to work or seek a job during this time. I ended up being evicted from my apartment, and became homeless. I found out about Final Salute while visiting my favorite gospel station's website. I was seeking inspiration and found a godsend! An organization whose mission is to assist homeless female veterans. It appeared to be divine intervention. I immediately called and was informed that they would indeed help me. It was a month before my scheduled surgeries. Final Salute not only assisted with providing shelter for me during that month, but one of the board members, who owns a car repair service, arranged to have my air conditioning fixed and made other repairs to my vehicle when they learned that I had been living out of my car. The surgeries were successful and the VA eventually assisted me with obtaining housing. However, I was unable to provide the landlord with the necessary funds. The VA suggested that I call Final Salute. I informed them that I was familiar with the organization. Again they were able to assist me during the transition to my new home. I will forever be grateful for this organization and especially to their founder, Captain Jas Boothe. I want to give back and plan to volunteer with local organizations that help the poor and homeless in Washington, D.C."

"I am a veteran of the United States Navy. My story starts in September of 2011. I had just come home and was transferred off active duty. I didn't have a place to stay officially so I stayed with some friends. I looked for a job everyday, however, no one was hiring. I found jobs here and there, usually paying under minimum wage. In January, I was faced with homele...ssness. I jumped from house to house, desperately trying to find somewhere warm for the night.

Once tax time came around, I saw a glimmer of hope. I was able to put my taxes towards a down deposit on a small apartment under a house to live. I continued doing the small jobs to make rent, however, I was falling incredibly behind on my car payment for a car I have purchased in 2009 (when my financial situation was a lot better).

In March I found a saving grace. I was offered a job doing what I did in the Navy. I started almost immediately and have held the job ever since. However, I was unable to catch up on my car payments. And then my worst nightmare came to life. I received a repossession letter in the mail for my car. I had fall behind way too many months and just couldn't catch back up.

Faced with two very difficult choices, I was completely lost. It was either pay for my car and lose my home, or pay for my home and lose my car. It was a catch-22 situation. Without my car, I wouldn't be able to go to work and make money for my rent and other bills, but without a home I had nothing.

So I turned to the VA which directed my to FSI. I wrote them and told them about my dreadful situation. They were my saving grace. They prevented homelessness, job and car loss and most importantly...hope.

Without FSI, I don't know where I'd be or what I'd do. I can finally get back on my feet. If I'm ever in the situation where I have the means to offer help, FSI will be the first place I go to donate whatever I can. Until then, my deepest gratitude goes out to everyone who has donated to this foundation and the FSI itself."

"I was seventeen when I raised my right hand, taking an oath to protect and defend my country. It was while on my tour of duty overseas that I discovered an enemy I had not been trained to fight when becoming a victim of Military Sexual Trauma at the hands of members within my own chain of command. I choose to remain silent when I returned stateside in fear of retribution. That fear became reality when I was discharged against my wishes under the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. It was then, nearly a decade ago, that I realized my battle had only just begun. I found myself isolated and stigmatized within the Department of Veteran Affairs. During this time, the VA system had not yet developed resources to address the silent epidemic of military rape, nor had it equipped itself to adequately meet the individual needs of the female veteran population.

Although I had hung up my uniform and stowed my boots, I never stopped being a soldier. I felt it was my duty to continue doing what was necessary to bring awareness to what had happened to me and what I knew to be many others throughout the military. It was not easy enduring relentless interrogations by several different VA personnel especially with having solid evidence on record of the military sexual trauma I experienced. I was ashamed and humiliated, nevertheless I did not waiver. My dreams of being a lifelong career soldier where stolen from me, by remaining steadfast throughout the VA process a part of me believed I was still serving my country. As the war ended in Iraq, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment in knowing I had been a part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, having now established a Military Sexual Trauma program. Facilities designed and dedicated specifically to meet the needs of female veterans where becoming more available in all regions within the VA system. I had made a safe and suitable home for myself as successful full time student while receiving treatment to manage my symptoms of P.T.S.D. steaming from the M.S.T. and other physical health issues also service connected.

In the beginning of 2011, I was devastated when I discovered that all the benefits of compensation I had fought so many years to obtain where dropped without notice. I desperately pleaded with the VA and was given only one explanation that, “there has been a clerical error in the system.” I truly believed that as quick as the VA made the mistake they would fix it. After more than a year moving from place to place with little more than my suitcase, waiting for the VA to do what was right and necessary in order for me to regain the life I had built for myself, would be too long of a process to wait for. Once again, I found myself isolated and stigmatized within a country I had so proudly served. Being classified as homeless and having to admit this as a fact was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I had never asked for any assistance from any resource other than the compensation for having experienced MST that granted eligibility for medical care, as well as, educational benefits earned by my service in the Army. I didn’t feel entitled to anything that was not guaranteed to all individuals at the time of enlistment into active duty service with the US Armed Forces.

For the first time ever I reached out for help in a distraught plea to Final Salute Inc in March of 2012 with an email after stumbling onto the FSI website. This is that email:

“Last March, I lost my benefits without notice. I connected with a DAV rep that has gotten me back to currently being rated at 60. When I lost my benefits, I lost my home, my car, my clothes, and many other things. I have been a veteran for 8 years. I’ve never asked for any government assistance outside of VA compensation for PTSD due to military sexual trauma I experienced the year I spent in Korea. It took me years to establish my benefits and make myself a safe and comfortable home. I was in school. I really believed that things were turning around for me after the army and spending a year being raped by a member within my own chain of command only to be discharged against my wishes under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Still I have so much pride for my service and would still be serving if they’d let me. I feel very ashamed and humiliated to be in this position. I put all my faith in the army and then in the VA. I followed all the steps that were available. Now, I am homeless. Since last March, when I lost my benefits, I have been going from one friend to another as I try to be patient with the VA and figure out where I go from here. I don’t have family support. My family finds it hard to believe what has happened to me. They can’t understand and for reasons I will never know, they don’t try to understand. I know that there are women with children and men that are surely worse off than I am. That is what makes me believe I have not been entitled to receive extra help. As it is right now though, I have no choice but to swallow my pride and reach out to someone. I am in the VA’s records as homeless. Where I am currently staying is too far to walk or get a bus to go to the doctor or other appointments I need to make with the VA. I don’t know what, if any, help may be an option for me but I am not asking for a handout but rather a hand up. I just want a home after living out of a suitcase in place to place for a year. I want to be a student again. I want to eat healthy and not worry about spreading my food to last sometimes skipping days eating. I want to be in a safe place and free from abuse and cruelty. These seem like such simple things that I thought I had for myself until an error in address information was reason enough for the VA to take it away. I will obtain an electronic copy of my DD214. I understand there is a waiting list. I have never applied with anyone outside the VA for any kind of assistance so I am not sure where to even begin. If there is any chance I may receive some direction, I would be forever grateful. I am walking through this alone and haven’t really gotten anywhere with this process in the last year. Where I am now, I cannot stay. I am seeking information on transitional temporary housing until moving into my own home. Thank you for what you do. When I am on the other side of this, I want to give back to other female homeless veterans. The options available are so few.”

I had never been so candid about my circumstance with anyone. In all honesty, I did not believe anything would come of it; rather, it was my way of venting to what I assumed was a computer with no emotions on the other end. I sent it; I forgot about it, I kept marching forward. A short time later I was contacted by the founder and president of Final Salute Inc, Jas Boothe. After a 20 minute conversation, she asked me to do the one thing I still find harder than any other thing. She said, “I need you to trust me.”  Knowing the very limited options available to homeless female veterans, especially those without drug and alcohol problems, I decided to take a leap of faith. I packed everything I own, again, as I had become accustomed to doing and was able to do in just a few pieces of luggage. I got on a bus with a ticket FSI made available for me to pick up at the bus station.

After only two weeks, I found myself a world away from where I had been at the same time the year before.  I was now in the company of female veterans who were not any less proud of their service as I. Intelligent, patriotic, honorable, and selfless female veterans whom had also found themselves in a circumstance they could not have possibly foreseen. With them I needed no explanation. The support has been overwhelming and one of the biggest blessings of my life. I don’t want to imagine what my life could have become if I had not reached out to Final Salute Inc in that solely exclusive email. I write these words praying they will reach others who are in a place I have been. If these words are your words, please, speak up, reach out, and know that you are not alone. There are so many of us who share in knowing how fast our lives can be taken over by things beyond our control. It will take us all standing together with one message to end veteran homelessness; “they may count us down, but they will never be able to count us out!”

"Final Salute has been very helpful. They gave me a chance when I thought I did not have any more left. They did not discriminate against me and were very supportive. I appreciate how they worked with me and did not make a promise they did not keep. Although my son may not understand why I had tears of joy in my eyes, he knew it was from joy. Thank You Final Salute."

"I have been a resident of the transitional home since November 2011 and I must say that this program was/is my “saving Grace”.  I am a Veteran, having served 6 ½ years in the Army and I became homeless as a result of unemployment, and a domestic violence situation which caused me to separate from my spouse and obtain housing for me and my two children (ages 7 and 5 at the time) after having to live in a domestic violence shelter for 2 months.  Because I was a Veteran, I reached out to the Veteran’s Administration for assistance with finding housing and employment, but was told that at the time that they didn’t have any funds available for housing assistance, and that they could give me a listing of shelters for me and my children to contact.  They were more concerned about my mental state than my circumstances at hand.

A Facebook friend referred me to Jas for assistance with my rent payment so that I could avoid eviction, and when I contacted her she did not hesitate to take the necessary steps to assist me.  Her assistance prevented me and my children from getting evicted, however because I was unemployed, I still carried the burden of trying to figure out how I was going to pay the following month’s rent.  I say that Final Salute, Inc. was/is my “Saving Grace” because Jas took the initiative to follow-up with me to find out how things were going for me after she provided me with assistance.  I shared with her the predicament that I was facing, and she made me aware that her organization had a home that had just opened up and that I qualified to become a resident.  She immediately scheduled an appointment for me to meet with her and two days before Thanksgiving 2011 I moved into the Final Salute home.

Since I have been a resident of the home, Jas has displayed a genuine concern for the well-being of me and my children,  as well as the other residents of the home.  Jas goes over and beyond the call of duty to ensure that all of the residents needs are being met, and provides the necessary resources and referrals for each of our individual needs.  Jaspen wears many hats in that she is a soldier, a sounding board, a mentor, a wife, a mother, a friend, a sister, an astute business woman, etc., and she does it all without seeking anything in return for herself…..just the joy and satisfaction in knowing that she is making a difference and a positive impact in the life of a homeless female Veteran.  The passion that she has for homeless female Veterans can not only be felt when you are in her presence or when you speak with her, but it can be seen in her everyday actions that she so effortlessly carry’s out without complaints.

Jas has touched my life and the lives of my children in ways that are indescribable, and I would, without hesitation, be proud to be a part of any group, organization, or event in which Jas leads because I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that she will take the charge with passion and zeal, and do what is necessary to accomplish the goal(s) at hand."

“I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to Jas Boothe for persevering and creating Final Salute.  The program provides a beautiful safe-haven for women Veterans experiencing homelessness.  Due to being unemployed for over 6 months, I experienced financial hardship and had to move out of my apartment home. Just in a nick of time, I found out about Final Salute.  At first, I had hesitancy about the housing program because I did not know what to expect.   However, Jas made me feel at ease and offered me a tour of the home.  Much to my surprise, the home was beautiful and still offered individual privacy.

My time at Final Salute allowed me to find employment without the pressures of wondering where I would live. The transitional housing provided by Final Salute is a wonderful, supportive program that allows you to regroup and become successfully independent again. I am thankful to God that a program like this is available and hope the program will expand into other areas.”

All the Best,

"After exiting the military after 8 years of honorable service, I was faced with potentially becoming homeless, with no way to feed my 3 children.  As a single parent, the stress of not being able to provide for my family and trying to establish a household was overwhelming. Luckily, I did find a good job and a home.  Unfortunately, with no family or friends around to assist, I burned through my savings paying for child care, and daily living expenses (gas, groceries..etc).

Things  really took a turn for the worse when I didn’t get my first pay in time to cover the rent.  So, I reached out to Final Salute for assistance. Within a day or two, my rent and late fees had been paid!!

No words can express the relief I felt. I try not to imagine what COULD have happened if I hadn’t received the help.

I am so grateful."

Thanks & Regards,

"Dear Final Salute Inc.,

My name is Demeatrice and my daughter is named Roshana. I'm a female veteran of The United States Army and my daughter is going to the 2nd grade this fall. We both want to Thank Final Salute Inc. for everything that they have done for us because if it hadn't been for your Help my daughter and I would have been Homeless.

As we all are aware times are hard and getting harder by the day. I'm currently unemployed and I'm seeking but when my only source of income had stopped it put me in a bind and I really got behind on my bills. Once you get behind on your bills it kind of hard to catch up. I tried to borrow from people that I do know but they are struggling also and the family that I do have are in North Carolina. Also struggling. It didn't take long before an eviction notice was sent to me. Oh Lord what do I do?.?

My caseworker from (VAMC) Veterans Affairs Medical Center referred me to Final Salute Inc. To sum up my story my daughter and I are still in our apartment and we are finally caught up on my rent. I Thank God everyday for Final Salute Inc. They came through in a serious pinch. I'm sooooo glad that they were there. Once again; Thanks Final Salute Inc. for everything and May God BLESS You All."

“When we didn’t know how our situation was going to turn out and we thought we were forgotten … your assistance came when we needed it the most!

Thank you very much for your help.”

"I'm a Army National Guard soldier who's journey started about a year ago. I've been in the military for almost five years now and about a year ago after my now ex-husband finished his tour in Iraq my future started to look dark. We started to fight frequently about something, nothing, and everything and a month before our second anniversary he served me with divorce papers and said you gotta go like from yesterday. I was shocked as  this was the first time we would be together as a  married couple for more than two weeks here, maybe three days there, because he left immediately after we got married. I didn't know where that was coming from and all i got was different lousy excuses about why he wanted a divorce. After that i immediately started to look for apartments, a better job and for programs that would help me. I had no luck in any of those departments, so I resorted to begging and pleading to him to let me stay longer since I'm still his wife and you know I don't have any family members here in America to help me. He said nope u gotta go. I still continued to look for a new job and to find even a room to move into. During that search my part time job at the time started to cut hours, benefits and pay because they had to file for bankruptcy. I thought things couldn't get any worse. I started to gain more weight, I wouldn't answer my phone, I almost failed my classes, i was getting really depressed.

I decided I had to snap out of it and one day when I was in the process of packing up my things to put in storage I saw this military magazine that was mailed to my now ex husband and the headline said "Homeless Soldier". I read the story it was about a male soldier and on the side it had information on reasons why soldiers especially female soldiers end up being homeless and different organizations that helps female soldiers who are homeless or who's potentially going to be homeless. That was when I found out about "Final Salute". I immediately started to make phone calls to all the programs and I only got a response back from Final Salute. In the beginning I was hesitant because I would have to move to another state and even though I visited the website I still had doubts. I thought it was going to be like a shelter or a transitional house. I decided to stay in my state a little bit longer to see if my luck would change. All i kept on hearing was you qualify 50% 80% 90% so since your not in the 100% we can't help you, we understand your situation & we would really like to help you but you gotta be 100%. Since for months other programs bamboozled me I was like another state if this program do the same I'm going to be homeless and stuck in another state. So a friend convinced me to stay I did and it didn't turn out to be good after all. Being faced again with potentially being homeless I emailed  Jas again for help. We started to communicate and discussed when and how I would get to the house.

This was the best decision I made since my journey started . For the first time, I don't have to worry about where I'm going to sleep,if I sneeze too hard or laugh too loud, talk or don't talk too much,  I'm not going to hear " you gotta go". I'm not stressed like I use to be and I feel very comfortable. Since I've been here, I have been given plenty of resources to gain new skills and not only to get back on my feet financially, but to get physically and emotionally fit again.  Thanks to Jas, I didn't just gain a roof over my head, I also gained new friends and a family. This program has been and still is a blessing for me and the other ladies in the house words cannot express how I feel.

Living here, I'm not constantly reminded of "hey we helped you when you were down, so you better do this or help us do this or when I was in the same situtation." I say that because they don't belittle us or make us feels like failures, they just give us the support we need.

I really appreciate what your doing for us."

"My name is Melanie B.  I am a U.S. Navy veteran, honorably discharged in 2010 after five years of active duty service.  Upon separation I had all my ducks lined up, so to speak, as far as career and education plans went.

In August 2011 I took a job as an educational aide with the school district in my area.  Seeing right away that I would need an additional source of income, I started looking for a second job --- something just part-time, for the evening.  During this job search I applied for several full-time positions as well, in case I would just have to totally replace my E.A. job.

After about two months of job searching, submitting applications and/or resumes for more than 40 positions, a restaurant hired me for a waitressing job.  At first I was relieved.  I said to myself, "Finally some extra money!!"  However, after three weeks I ended up leaving the job due to a painful ligament issue in my left foot, a condition that had been aggravated by my military service.  I went back on my job search, trying to find work (part-time or full-time) that was not so physically demanding.  In the meantime my finances were collapsing.

By January 2012, I was already four months behind on my rent, and getting closer to being evicted.  I had never been in such a predicament, ever, in my life.  I am an educated person with a solid set of marketable skills.  However, in this tough economy, no one is immune to the hardships that a tough economy can cause.  Something that I had never once imagined could happen to me was actually happening: I was facing the possibility of becoming homelessness.

Things are good now.  Everything is back on track for me, but it took a long time for me to get everything back in order.  Without the assistance of Final Salute, I never would have been able to gather all the funds that I needed to pay off all of that back rent.  Because of the compassion and generosity of Final Salute, I was able to buy myself the time that I needed to realign my career and educational goals, so that I could get my collapsed finances back on track, and so that I would no longer be on the verge of homelessness.

I salute this organization.  Without Final Salute, I do not know where I would be right now.  From the bottom of my heart, a million thank you's for all that you do.  Because of your hard work, there is one less homeless Veteran out on the streets."

Sincerely,

Melanie B. -  Washington, DC

"I remember hearing the old saying “it’s always darkest before the dawn”. Well, the light was shone brighter than a beacon in the night when I made contact with Final Salute, Inc.. Things happened so fast and so precise, it couldn’t have been planned better. Everyone here has been kind, courteous and ever so helpful. Final Salute gives a woman the opportunity to reestablish herself without the stresses that many other programs and restrictions place on you, which allows you to maintain your dignity. The surroundings are peaceful, safe and clean. The  support and encouragement that is provided is second to none.

Thanks to Final Salute, I am finally in a position to get and maintain a solid footing to sustain myself with pride, in the same manner in which I served."

"My journey to homelessness began when I was kicked out by my significant other and sent to live with my mom for a couple of months. Things didn't work out in that situation because of over crowdiness, and I wasn't use to having to depend on anyone because everyone always came to me. Not living my military life drove me nuts, but by the Grace of God I saw this little box that kept popping up on my laptop about homeless female Veterans. I kept saying  I'll read it later, but I put it off for a week. Then I finally opened it and read the stories of other females and my heart melted because this isn't the way it was suppose to happen. We defend our Country and then we end up losing so much. But it's really hard to cope with; it's mind blowing. But thanks to Final Salute I have a roof over my head, food to eat, friendly ladies, and a lovely home. I feel so blessed right now and I pray that this organization grows bigger because there are so many more females out here facing homelessness. It's not that we are homeless we are just struggling to gain employment."

"I dedicated 12 years of my life to the military and never once have I asked for help, because It's not something that I do because I'm a very strong independent individual I thought it made me look like a failure. know that you cant get anything in life for free, there is always a catch. But when I really needed the help I took a deep breath and asked, and when I saw the check to help pay for my rent where all my belongings are I wanted to cry. I was so happy you don't understand how much stress I was going through and I don't have to pay it back which I cant even afford right now. Just knowing that there are people out their who care enough to help, makes me more proud to have served my country.  WOW......... I just want to say Thank You, Thank you very much I would give you a Big bear hug if you standing in front of me."
